Your Comfort Book
I am not entirely certain what is meant by a comfort book. Does it refer to a book you read when you just want to be comfortable and don’t want to have to think too much? Or is it actually alluding to a book that you read when you are stressed or upset and needing comfort? This is not made clear in the question, so I guess I will address both issues.
When I am stressed and needing comfort, I like to immerse myself in the familiar. At these times, I will read one of several favourite books or series, giving me the impression of visiting with old friends. Most often these consist of the Empire trilogy by Janny Wurts and Raymond E. Feist or The Belgariad and The Mallorean by David Eddings.
The Empire Trilogy, consisting of Daughter of the Empire, Servant of the Empire and Mistress of the Empire, tells the story of Mara, Lady of the Acoma, who brings great changes to her world in pursuit of the one thing we all want most – peace and safety for herself, family and her people.
The Belgariad and The Mallorean are fantasy series’ that tell the story of Garion, an ordinary young farm hand whose world is turned upside-down as he struggles to cope in extraordinary circumstances in which nobody is who he thought, least of all himself.
On the other hand, if I am merely seeking to relax, and rest my brain, I prefer to read easy, entertaining and engrossing books such as thrillers, horrors or easy-to-read mysteries. Stephen King and Dean Koontz are favourites in this genre, as are Agatha Christie and my newly found interest Janet Evanovitch.
I guess these could all be classed as my comfort books. What are yours?
