A Book You Couldn’t Put Down
Wow. It seems as though I have made it through to the end. Well, for this final category, I am going to use a trilogy, rather than a single book. You may recall that I mentioned an Australian author, Garth Nix on day 17. It is his Old Kingdom trilogy that I have chosen for my final recommendation – a series that I found extremely difficult to put down.
Sabriel by Garth Nix
Sabriel is a fascinating fantasy novel. The characters are believable and filled with life, and the juxtaposition of modern and Old world’s somehow ominous. There is layer upon layer of depth in this story and it is very difficult to put down. I feel that the author’s unique style will make this book enjoyable even to those who are not fans of the genre.
Lirael by Garth Nix
Lirael is the sequel to the highly popular Sabriel. It is fourteen years later and Sabriel and Touchstone have established a safe-haven for their subjects. However, the Dead still plague outreaching settlements and a disturbing new danger has started to stir.
This book is a fitting follower to Sabriel. It is well written and the characters are realistic and inspire empathy. The story is exciting and intriguing and I found it difficult to stop reading. Lirael is even better than Sabriel.
Abhorsen by Garth Nix
Abhorsen is the riveting conclusion to the Old Kingdom trilogy. As with the previous books, I really love the contrast between Ancelstierre – the world as we know it – and the Old Kingdom – a world of magic and mystery where the dead come to life and modern technology ceases to operate. In this book, the two worlds come closer together than ever before and both face total annihilation. Both Sameth and Lirael come into their inheritance and we finally discover the true natures of Mogget and the Disreputable Dog. This book, like the others, is a thrilling and engrossing read.
There you have it – a brilliant trilogy by an extremely talented Australian author which I highly recommend you read as soon as possible.
