30 Fanfic Challenge – Day 28

Favourite quote from a fan-fiction

“There’s [sic] isn’t really any such thing as heroes and villains, Sirius. Good and evil don’t exist. Very few people get into this stuff because they’re legitimately evil. People have goals and motives and when someone is willing to fight for their ideals it’s because they believe in what they’re fighting for. They believe that they are the good guys. Everyone believes that they’re the ones in the right and the people fighting against them are the ones who are wrong. It’s all about perspective in the end. History is written by the victors, which is why the history books are always able to peg one side as evil while the other side – the winning side – were the heroes and saviors.

Everyone has goals and objectives that they believe in and are willing to fight for, and no one fights with the goal of destroying the world unless they’re an insane sociopath or something…”

— Harry Potter speaking to Sirius Black in Descent Into Darkness by Athey

This is one of my favourite quotes altogether, not just my favourite fan-fiction quote. The reason this is so, is because it aligns so closely with my own world view. I believe that nobody is purely evil, just as nobody is purely good. We are all, every one of us, a mixture of light and dark. Even the most ‘evil’ of men is capable of doing good. Even the most ‘saintly’ is capable of great evil. Everybody has a back-story, everyone has their reasons for being who they are and the world is full of shades of grey.
