British Food?

I have recently developed an interest in trying as many traditional and regional British dishes as I can. I don’t know why — there was no specific incident or trigger for this interest. I simply, all of a sudden, desired to try more British style foods. We mainly eat Asian and Indian, with a little Italian and American thrown in, so I really don’t have a lot of experience with foods from the Mother Country.

Through a combination of recent Google & YouTube searches, and general knowledge, I know about the following dishes (off the top of my head), which I believe to be British cuisine:

  • Shepherd’s Pie
  • Fish and Chips
  • Chip Buttys
  • Full English Breakfast
  • Baked Beans
  • Black Pudding
  • Pork Pies
  • Yorkshire Pudding
  • Chelsea Buns
  • Victoria Sponge
  • Apple Turnovers
  • Scones
  • Cucumber Sandwiches
  • Haggis
  • Spotted Dick
  • Fruitcake
  • Tea
  • Lemonade
  • Bread and Butter Pudding

I’m quite sure this is nowhere near a comprehensive list of traditional and regional British cuisine, so I have a request for all you Brits out there, as well as anyone who has spent a significant amount of time in Britain.

I’d like suggestions from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. Please understand, I mean no offence to the Irish. I’m aware that the Republic of Ireland is not part of Britain, but it is part of the gastronomic region I’m interested in.

What British (and Irish) foods do you think I should try out?

    • Thank you for this list. I will definitely be trying them all out. I’ve had both sausage rolls and crumpets before, but only store bought. I would like to try my hand at making them myself. My kids tend to put peanut butter on their crumpets. I don’t understand it, myself. I much prefer to smother them in honey.

I also love scones with strawberry jam and cream. Dad used to cook them all the time. We always used whipped cream, which I understand is different from clotted cream? Fun fact, Lady Flo, the wife of one of Queensland’s most notorious Premiers, was famous for her pumpkin scones.

Steak and Kid is my favourite kind of pie but, again, I’ve only had store bought. Believe it or not, I’ve managed to move past 40 yrs old without ever having a traditional Sunday Roast.

I am looking forward to trying out the other foods on this list.
